KPMG Caribbean Region Banking Survey 2009
It is our pleasure to bring you KPMG’s 2009 Regional Financing Survey for the Caribbean. The financing survey was conducted directly with senior commercial lending decision makers in each of the participating banks, whose aggregate exposure to the industry in the region exceeds US$ 3.5 billion. The survey provides information on:
- Financing trends
- Outlook for the region
- Loss mitigation strategies
Since last year’s survey global economic conditions have evolved from a credit crunch to a global economic crisis. Some of the new lenders that had entered the market during the real estate boom of 2004 to 2007 have become casualties of the credit crisis, and survey results reveal a tightening in current terms and conditions for US dollar hospitality loans over the past year.
It should not be assumed that the events since the onset of the financial crisis will permanently damage growth prospects for the region. Although both lenders and investors are very cautious at present the fundamental attraction of the region continues to exist and stalwart lenders remain committed to the region for the long term.
